Movie Review: Take Shelter
If you’re in the mood for a thought-provoking and chilling movie, then Take Shelter is definitely the one for you. The movie which was released in 2011, directed and written by Jeff Nichols will leave you with so many questions in your head once it’s over.
The Plot
The story revolves around Curtis LaForche (played by Michael Shannon), a family man who works as a construction worker in rural Ohio. He begins to have terrifying dreams about an upcoming storm that could threaten his life and his family’s lives as well.
Curtis tries to figure out if these dreams are just nightmares or if they are visions of a real disaster that is yet to come. His anxiety slowly starts to affect his everyday life, leading him to build a storm shelter in their backyard.
The Acting and Characters
The casts did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. Michael Shannon gave an outstanding performance as Curtis LaForche, portraying him as a man torn between trying to protect his family and struggling with his mental health issues caused by his premonitions.
Jessica Chastain also played a significant role as Samantha, Curtis’s wife, and their realistic chemistry contributed to the overall suspense of the movie.
The Cinematography
The cinematography is superb, capturing the haunting and eerie vibe of the movie perfectly. The shots of storm clouds gathering and lightning flashes were absolutely stunning.
The Music Scores
The music scores by composer David Wingo was also commendable. The soundtrack perfectly complements the overall feel of the film, with its haunting melancholic tunes adding a sense of hopelessness and fear.
My Thoughts on the Movie
Watching Take Shelter left me feeling disturbed and uneasy for days. The movie ended with a shocking twist, leaving me questioning what I would have done if I was in Curtis’s position.
The movie shows how mental illness can manifest itself in different ways and how it can affect not only the person experiencing it but also those around them.
