I have never heard of “Avalon” until a friend recommended it to me. With nothing else to do on a Saturday night, I decided to watch it. And boy, did it not disappoint! Directed by Barry Levinson and released in 1990, this movie is a masterpiece. The storyline is intriguing and the acting was superb. I could not help but be drawn into the film’s world.

The Storyline

The story takes place in Baltimore during the early 20th century and follows an immigrant family, the Krichinskys. It depicts their pursuit of the American Dream as they try to establish themselves in the country. The patriarch of the family, Sam Krichinsky (Armin Mueller-Stahl), owns and operates a grocery store which soon becomes a local landmark. Throughout the movie, tensions arise among family members as they wrestle with their pasts and their desire for progress.

When I watched this movie, it struck a chord with me. I felt connected to the story and the characters in a way that I never thought I would. It was an emotional ride from start to finish. The cinematography was stunning, and the soundtracks added depth to each scene.

I would highly recommend “Avalon” to anyone looking for a movie that will resonate with them. It is a hidden gem that deserves more recognition than it has received over the years.

Gossip and Soundtracks

One piece of gossip related to this movie is that Steve Jobs was one of its biggest fans. According to Barry Levinson, Jobs called him every year for a decade to talk about it. The soundtrack of this movie is also notable, with Randy Newman composing most of the music. It effectively conveyed the emotions present in each scene.

History and Popularity

Avalon history

“Avalon” was released in 1990 and received critical acclaim at the time. It was nominated for four Academy Awards but unfortunately did not win any. Despite this, it has gained a cult following over the years, with some even considering it a masterpiece.

Scenes and Cinematography

Avalon scenes

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when Sam Krichinsky recalls his childhood memories of his uncle Gabriel (Lou Jacobi) telling him stories around the fireplace. The flashback scene is shot beautifully and evokes feelings of nostalgia in both Sam and the audience.

The cinematography in this movie is also noteworthy. The use of lighting and color effectively convey different moods throughout the film. It truly adds depth to each scene and draws viewers deeper into the story.

Analysis and Special Effects

Avalon analysis

One aspect that I found interesting about “Avalon” is how it portrays the tension between tradition and progress. It is a theme that still resonates with us today, especially in our current fast-paced world. The special effects in this movie are not grandiose, but rather subtle and elegant. They do not detract from the story but rather enhance it.

Dialogue and Crew

The dialogue in this movie is well-written, with each line adding to the characters’ depth and the story’s plot. Barry Levinson’s direction and crew deserve special mentions for bringing this movie to life.

Criticism and Production

Avalon production

Despite its critical acclaim, some have criticized “Avalon” for being slow-paced and lacking action. However, I believe that these criticisms miss the point of the film entirely. It is a character-driven story that focuses on the Krichinsky family’s struggles as they navigate their new lives in America. The production of this movie is also noteworthy, with Levinson’s attention to detail evident throughout.

Conclusion

In conclusion, “Avalon” is a must-watch movie that I would highly recommend to everyone. Its storyline, acting, cinematography and soundtrack make it a captivating experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
