When I first heard about “Saving Mr. Banks,” I was intrigued. A movie about the making of one of my favorite childhood films, “Mary Poppins”? Count me in! And after watching it, I can honestly say that it lived up to my expectations and more.

The Storyline

Saving Mr. Banks plot

The movie follows the story of P.L. Travers (played by Emma Thompson), the author of “Mary Poppins,” as she works with Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) and his team to bring her beloved character to the big screen. Throughout the process, we see flashbacks from Travers’ childhood in Australia, which help explain her reluctance to let go of her creation.

The Casts

We get to see the behind-the-scenes process of how “Mary Poppins” was brought to life, from the casting of Julie Andrews to the creation of the iconic songs. There are so many great scenes in this movie, it’s hard to pick just one favorite! But I particularly loved the ones where they were rehearsing the songs (like “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”). It was fascinating to see how they came up with the choreography and how much work goes into making a musical number look effortless.

The Cinematography

Saving Mr. Banks cinematography

The cinematography in “Saving Mr. Banks” is gorgeous, capturing both the sunny optimism of California and the muted colors of 1960s London. And the way they seamlessly blended in footage from “Mary Poppins” was really impressive.

The Special Effects

Saving Mr. Banks special effects

This movie doesn’t have a lot of special effects, but the ones that it does have are well-done. I was particularly impressed by the scene where Travers is flying in to Los Angeles and looking out the window at the animated penguins from “Mary Poppins.”
