Best Defense: A Movie That Will Make You Want to Hide Under Your Couch
Have you ever seen a movie that made you question the very existence of cinema? Well, “Best Defense” is one of those movies. Made in 1984, this comedy film directed by Willard Huyck and starring Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy was supposed to be a hit. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the biggest box office bombs in history. But why was it so bad? Let’s take a closer look.
The Plot
The story follows an engineer named Wylie Cooper (Dudley Moore) who is trying to invent a new type of tank for the US Army. Meanwhile, a soldier (Eddie Murphy) accidentally gets trapped inside one of the prototypes and ends up in North Africa. The rest of the film sees Wylie trying to retrieve the tank while also dealing with personal problems.
The Casts
Now, you might think that having two talented actors like Dudley Moore and Eddie Murphy would make for some great performances. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. Both actors seem completely lost and unsure about how to act in this mess of a movie.
The Dialogue
If someone told me that this movie was mostly improvised, I would believe them. The dialogue is so bad that it’s almost impressive. There’s one scene where Dudley Moore’s character says “I must have done something really bad in my past life to deserve this.” That’s how the audience feels while watching this movie.
The Soundtrack
The only good thing about this movie is the soundtrack, which features songs by some great artists like The Pointer Sisters and Kenny Loggins. Unfortunately, the music doesn’t make up for the rest of the film.
The Special Effects
This was made in 1984, so you might be thinking that at least the special effects would be decent. Nope! The scenes with the tank look like they were made with cardboard and duct tape. It’s actually kind of impressive how bad they are.
The Scenes
This movie is an absolute mess from start to finish. There are so many scenes that make no sense whatsoever. One minute we’re watching Dudley Moore trying to fix a tank, and then suddenly we’re in North Africa with Eddie Murphy. It’s almost like the writers were making it up as they went along.
The Production
It’s hard to believe that this movie had a budget of $18 million. Where did all that money go? Certainly not on the script or the special effects. This is a perfect example of how bad decisions can ruin a movie.
The Evaluation
“Best Defense” is, without a doubt, one of the worst movies ever made. It’s not even so bad that it’s good. It’s just plain bad. The fact that it was directed by Willard Huyck, who also directed “Howard the Duck,” says everything you need to know about this movie.
The Opinion
I’m not sure who thought this movie was a good idea, but I hope they never work in Hollywood again. “Best Defense” is an insult to anyone who loves movies. If you’re looking for a way to waste 94 minutes of your life, watch this movie. Otherwise, stay far away.
