The Hype around the Movie Zetchô kazoku: Aijin-darake

There has been a lot of buzz about the new movie “Zetchô kazoku: Aijin-darake,” and it’s not hard to see why. The film, directed by veteran filmmaker Yasuo Furuhata, is a gripping drama that explores the complex relationships between family members and lovers.

The Plot

The film follows the story of a wealthy family, the Sakurais, who are embroiled in an intricate web of secrets, lies, and betrayals. The patriarch of the family, Toshio Sakurai (played by Kinya Kitaoji), is a successful businessman who has built his fortune on shady dealings and unethical business practices.

As he approaches retirement age, Toshio starts to feel his mortality creeping up on him. He becomes increasingly paranoid and begins to suspect that his wife (Yoko Nogiwa) is cheating on him with their son-in-law (Tatsuya Fuji). His suspicions set off a chain reaction of events that threaten to tear the family apart.

Casts & Acting

The movie features an all-star cast of some of Japan’s most talented actors. Kinya Kitaoji delivers a powerful performance as Toshio Sakurai, perfectly capturing both his ruthless ambition and his vulnerability. Yoko Nogiwa delivers an equally impressive performance as Toshio’s long-suffering wife.

But it’s Tatsuya Fuji who steals the show as the enigmatic son-in-law. He brings a quiet intensity to the role and manages to convey a sense of deep inner turmoil with just a few subtle gestures.

The Cinematography

The film is shot in a moody, atmospheric style that perfectly complements its dark themes. The use of shadow and light creates an eerie, otherworldly quality that draws the viewer into the story.

One particularly impressive sequence features Toshio wandering through his empty mansion in the dead of night, his footsteps echoing ominously through the vacant rooms. The camera lingers on his face, capturing every flicker of emotion as he contemplates his own mortality.

The Soundtrack

The film’s haunting score, composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, perfectly captures the film’s brooding atmosphere. The sparse piano melodies and ethereal synth textures create an unsettling sense of tension that builds steadily throughout the movie.

My Opinion

I found “Zetchô kazoku: Aijin-darake” to be a deeply affecting movie. The complex relationships between the characters are explored in great detail and with great sensitivity. The performances are uniformly excellent, and the cinematography is breathtaking.

But what really resonated with me was the movie’s exploration of mortality and legacy. Toshio Sakurai is a man who has built an empire on lies and deceit, but as he faces his own mortality, he begins to question whether his legacy will be one worth leaving behind.

The movie’s final scene, in which Toshio stares out at the ocean and contemplates his own mortality, is a powerful and deeply moving moment that stayed with me long after the credits rolled.

The Bottom Line

Overall, “Zetchô kazoku: Aijin-darake” is a must-see for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking drama. The film’s exploration of complex family dynamics and its examination of mortality and legacy make it one of the most compelling movies I’ve seen in recent years. Highly recommended.
