Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn – A Casual Review
As a fan of Dragon Ball Z since my childhood, I was eagerly waiting for “Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn”. It is the twelfth movie of the Dragon Ball Z franchise and was released on 4th March 1995 in Japan. Thanks to my friend’s DVD collection, I finally got the chance to watch it last weekend.
The Storyline
The story revolves around a crisis in the afterlife. Due to an accident at the check-in station, numerous evil souls are now free and creating havoc in both the living and dead world. The only solution is for Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta and stop Janemba, the main antagonist of this movie who has transformed hell into his playground.
The Plot
“Fusion Reborn” has a unique plot compared to other DBZ movies. The setting is not based on earth, but rather in the afterlife. The concept of good and evil souls being separated by lines adds a new dimension to this movie. Also, Janemba’s character design is beyond imagination, with his ability to change reality at will.
The Cast
The original Japanese cast has returned for this movie, providing a nostalgic feel for fans. Masako Nozawa’s voice acting as Goku is remarkable, as always. Also, Ryō Horikawa did excellent work as Vegeta.
The Acting and Characters
The acting of the voice artists in this movie was superb. The characters are given enough screen time to showcase their personalities. The highlight is the fusion of Goku and Vegeta, which results in Gogeta – one of the most iconic characters in DBZ history.
The History and Popularity
“Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” was a financial success in Japan, grossing over 2.3 billion yen. It was also released in North America on home video by Funimation on March 13th, 2006. It has received positive reviews from most critics and fans worldwide till now.
My Evaluation
I find “Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” to be a significant addition to the franchise. It has some of the best fight scenes in the entire series. The villain Janemba is terrifying, and Gogeta’s appearance is one of the most awaited moments in DBZ history. Though there were some plot holes and a lack of character development, it was ultimately enjoyable.
The Cinematography
The cinematography was fantastic, with rich colors and visually stunning backdrops. The animators did a great job creating an immersive and believable world in the afterlife.
My Opinion
As a whole, “Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” is a great addition to any DBZ fans’ collection. It has everything that one would expect from a DBZ movie – epic fights, intense villains, iconic characters, and fantastic visuals. It’s been over 25 years since its release, but still holds up as an entertaining experience.
The Scenes
The final battle between Janemba and Gogeta is undoubtedly one of the best scenes in Dragon Ball Z history. The action choreography and animation quality are both top-notch, elevating the experience for viewers.
The Gossip
There were some rumors that the original release of “Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” was censored in North America due to its violent content. However, these rumors turned out to be false.
The Soundtracks
The music of “Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” was composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi, who has worked on multiple DBZ projects. The soundtrack does justice to the movie’s tone and action sequences.
The Analysis
“Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn” is a well crafted and executed movie. It provides an excellent balance between story progression and character development, along with some great action scenes.
The Special Effects
The special effects in this movie are top-notch, especially the battle sequences. The animators have done an exceptional job of creating new and exciting attacks for Gogeta and Janemba.

The Criticism
One of the few criticisms of this movie would be that some characters don’t receive as much screen time as others, leading to an uneven balance of character development. Also, some viewers may find some plot holes in the story.
